On a 155-metre high rock cone above Werfen it sits  majestic, seemingly impregnable, visible from afar: Hohenwerfen Castle. Built over 900 years ago, around 1075, it counts among Europe's most significant medieval fortresses. Extended, besieged and rebuilt many times, every stone of this fortress tells of the turmoil of history. Today it is not only a museum but also home to one of Europe's oldest falconries.

The Fortress

Hohenwerfen Fortress was built in the 11th century by the Salzburg archbishops as a bulwark against the Bavarian nobility. Over the centuries it was repeatedly expanded — especially under Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau in the 16th century. Visitors today pass through the defensive walls, the High Tower, the armoury with one of Austria's largest historic weapons collections, and the 12th-century castle chapel. An audio guide leads you through the history — from medieval fortification to its use as a prison and police academy in the 20th century.

Falconry — Birds of Prey in Flight

The highlight for many visitors: the daily flight shows of the state falconry. On the riding meadow in front of the castle, falconers demonstrate the high art of birding with eagles, vultures, falcons, and owls — a tradition revived at Hohenwerfen since 1987. The birds glide only metres above the heads of spectators. Shows usually at 11:15 and 15:15 (season-dependent). Our tip: plan enough time to also visit the aviary and the eagle island.

Combinable with Eisriesenwelt

Just 10 driving minutes separate Hohenwerfen Castle from Eisriesenwelt — the world's largest ice cave. The two highlights combine perfectly into a full-day trip: ice cave in the morning, picnic or a stop in Werfen at midday, castle with falcon flight in the afternoon. Our drivers know both destinations in detail and adjust the timing to the day's show schedule.

In peak season (May–October) typically at 11:15 and 15:15. Exact times vary slightly by season — we check them before your tour so timing and show line up.
Very much so — the falcon show in particular is a hit. The castle itself has some steep stairs and stony paths; strollers are difficult. For small children a carrier works better.
Our private transfer takes you to the castle car park in about 40 minutes via the A10. From there a short walk (15–20 min.) or a small lift takes you up to the fortress.
