The world's largest ice cave

42 km of frozen magic · Tennen Mountains · 1,641 m

Deep within the Tennen Mountains, at 1,641 meters altitude, lies a natural wonder of unimaginable scale: the Eisriesenwelt. With over 42 kilometers of explored passages, it is the world's largest ice cave. Only the first kilometer is accessible to visitors  but that single kilometer is enough to leave you speechless. Cathedral-high ice columns, frozen waterfalls, and a silence you can almost hear.

The Journey to the Cave
Chapter II

The Journey to the Cave

The adventure begins with the journey: A cable car takes you to 1,586m altitude, followed by a 20-minute walk to the cave entrance. Along the way, breathtaking panoramic views of the Salzach Valley and Hohenwerfen Castle unfold. The last tour starts at 3:30 PM — so plan enough time.

Chapter III

Experience the Cave

The guided tour lasts about 75 minutes and covers 134 metres of elevation inside — comparable to climbing the stairs of a 40-storey building. Discovered in 1879 by Salzburg natural scientist Anton Posselt (who only explored the first 200 m), the cave was further explored from 1912 by speleologist Alexander von Moerk. Carbide lamps light the way through magical ice palaces — the ice crystals sparkle in the warm light like diamonds. The temperature stays around 0°C year-round. Admission incl. cable car: Adults EUR 42. Cash desk: 8:30–15:00, last tour: 15:45. Tickets must be booked online in advance!
