A place between fascination and remembrance
The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is Austria's highest paved through-road and one of the world's most spectacular panoramic routes. Over 48 kilometres it snakes through 36 hairpin bends from Bruck in the Pinzgau to Heiligenblut in Carinthia, past flowering alpine pastures, sheer rock faces, and finally directly in front of the Grossglockner — at 3,798 m Austria's highest mountain. An experience nobody stays cold to.

Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe — Eye to eye with the Grossglockner
At 2,369 m sits the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, named after the Emperor who visited the Pasterze glacier here in 1856. The view is one of the most iconic moments in the Austrian Alps: directly ahead, the Grossglockner with its distinctive pyramid, below it the Pasterze — the longest glacier in the Eastern Alps. The modern visitor centre offers panoramic windows, exhibitions about the region, and a restaurant with a viewing terrace. A panoramic lift also brings you closer to the glacier.

Edelweiss Summit — 360° over the Alps
Branch off at the Fuscher Törl. A short, steep spur road climbs to 2,571 m at the Edelweiss Summit — the highest point on the route reachable by car and one of the most spectacular observation points in the Alps. In good weather you look across more than 30 three-thousand-metre peaks, including the Grossglockner, Wiesbachhorn, and Grossvenediger. A must on every crossing.

Timing & Toll Info
The road is open from early May to late October — closed outside this period due to snow. The toll for passenger cars is approx. EUR 42 (day ticket 2025/26); for our vehicles it is paid in advance and included in the tour price. Our insider tip: start early — until 10 am the road is noticeably emptier, and morning light on the Pasterze is unforgettable. Plan an additional 30–45 min. for the Edelweiss Summit and 1–1.5 hours for the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe.
