Where film history was made
In 1965, Salzburg became the backdrop for one of the most successful films of all time. The story of the von Trapp family, filmed at the most beautiful locations in the city and the Salzburg region, continues to attract millions of visitors to this day. From the majestic halls of Leopoldskron Palace to the romantic basilica in Mondsee — every filming location tells its own story.

Leopoldskron Palace
The magnificent Rococo palace on Leopoldskroner Lake served as the backdrop for the rear of the von Trapp family home. The famous scene where the children fall into the water was filmed here. The 18th-century palace is now a hotel and conference center, but the exterior with the pond and Untersberg mountain in the background is freely accessible — an iconic photo opportunity.

Mondsee Basilica
The late-Gothic Basilica of St. Michael in Mondsee, about 30 minutes east of Salzburg, is the location of the famous wedding scene. The impressive church interior with its baroque altars provided the perfect backdrop for Maria and Georg's wedding. The town of Mondsee itself sits picturesquely on the lake of the same name and invites a stroll along the shore.

Mirabell Gardens & Do-Re-Mi Steps
In the heart of Salzburg's old town lies the Mirabell Garden — setting of the famous Do-Re-Mi scene. Maria and the children danced up the steps of the Pegasus Fountain, around the Dwarf Garden figures, and along the rose hedges. The garden is freely accessible year-round and offers one of the most beautiful views of Hohensalzburg Fortress.

Nonnberg Abbey & Rock Riding School
Nonnberg Abbey, one of the oldest convents in the German-speaking world, served as Maria's abbey in the film. The medieval complex sits high above the old town, accessible via steep stairs. The Rock Riding School, part of the Salzburg Festival, was the setting for the music competition in the film — this is where the family sang 'So Long, Farewell.'
More Locations & Insider Tips
Schloss Frohnburg (Hellbrunner Allee) served as the front entrance of the Trapp house. The famous gazebo from the 'Sixteen Going On Seventeen' scene now stands in the park of Hellbrunn Palace. The Residenzplatz scenes from 'I Have Confidence' and the view from the Mönchsberg (now Restaurant M32) are further highlights.
