760+ km of pure adrenaline
Just 80 kilometres south of Salzburg lie two natural wonders that could hardly be more different — and yet belong together: the crystal-clear Lake Zell with the old town of Zell am See, and the Kitzsteinhorn — Salzburg's only year-round glacier at 3,029 m. In about 6 hours we combine both into one of the region's most spectacular day trips: glacier air on the rooftop of Salzburg in the morning, lakeside promenade and coffee with a water view in the afternoon.
Top of Salzburg — the Kitzsteinhorn
The modern 3K K-onnection tri-cable gondola sweeps you from Kaprun directly onto the Kitzsteinhorn. At the top, at 3,029 m, the 'Top of Salzburg' viewing platform awaits — with a 360° view of the Grossglockner, Grossvenediger, and Lake Zell. Open year-round, Salzburg's only year-round glacier ski area — and in summer a genuine high-altitude attraction you'd normally only find deep in the mountains. Glacier theming, ice arena, and a glacier gallery make the summit a true experience.
Lake Zell — Turquoise in the Hohe Tauern
Back in the valley, Lake Zell waits with its signature turquoise-green colour. The lakeside promenade in Zell am See invites a stroll, steam boats cruise across the lake, and waterfront cafés serve homemade cake. In good weather it's perfect for a boat trip (approx. 55-minute round tour) or a swim at one of the bathing spots. The Schmittenhöhe above the town adds a classic Alpine panorama of more than 30 three-thousand-metre peaks.
Our Timing Tip
Start early: in 75 minutes we reach Kaprun, where we head straight up the Kitzsteinhorn via cable car. At the summit you spend 1.5–2 hours. Early afternoon we move to Zell am See for lakeside promenade, lunch, and an optional boat cruise. Return to Salzburg around 4–5 pm. The trip works year-round — glacier skiing in winter, glacier walking in summer.
Your Transfer to Zell am See/Kaprun
We pick you up directly at your hotel in Salzburg and drive you to Kaprun in about 75 minutes via the A10 and the Pinzgau main road. Your driver knows the parking lots at the Gletscherjet base station and waits throughout your time at the glacier and the lake. Included in the price: round trip, up to 6 hours waiting time, parking fees. Cable car and admission tickets are extra.
